Respond. Never React. That is Performance Ownership

Hello Friends,

Be it our personal life or professional we always face situations that test us. A serious complaint from a customer, your boss questions your work, a colleague disagrees with you, someone sends an unpleasant email, an employee makes an unexpected mistake.

Generally majority people react under these situations and not respond. Today I'd like to share a simple yet powerful idea that performance ownership is owning the response.

Psychologists explain human behaviour using the Stimulus–Organism–Response model. Anything around us that makes think, feel, act, react is a stimulus. The way our mind processes that stimulus is called as organism which is based on our beliefs, emotions, experience and judgment. Based on processing of stimulus we respond to the situation. We may not control the stimulus but we have the ability to control our processing and response.

This is the most ignored behavioural aspect I want explain today.

Unfortunately majority of people react and not respond. They reply to an email in anger. They make decisions under emotional pressure. They speak before they think. In short they process the stimulus so fast, almost as if they are under an influence of something. And later they regret the way they reacted.

If we are not consciously processing the stimulus or the situation then it is a reaction not a response.

High performers and effective leaders behave differently.

They often realize that between every stimulus and every response lies a small but powerful space. It may last only a few seconds, but that is where leadership and ownership is demonstrate. For greater performance, we need to learn to own the space between stimulus and response. This we can do with the way we process the stimulus. In that brief moment, we need to ask ourselves:

What options do I have to respond and What response is likely to create the best outcome?

Performance ownership is all about taking that strategic pause and process the questions before we respond.

That single shift changes everything. The best leaders are not respected because they react the fastest. They are respected because they consistently make thoughtful decisions. Whether it's an email, a difficult conversation, a business decision or feedback to a team member, they own the quality of their response. And that is what earns trust. That is what builds credibility. That is what defines leadership.
