Fix Your Personal Culture Before Blaming Organization Culture
Most professionals are quick to blame “organizational culture” for poor performance, lack of growth, or execution gaps. But how often do we pause and examine our own personal culture?
I still remember one powerful lesson from my Engineering college days. Our Engineering Drawing professor used to insist not only on accurate drawings, but also on the cleanliness of the drawing sheet, the sharpness of lines, consistency of lettering, and the overall presentation.
He used to say, “Your drawing is not only reflecting your knowledge. It is reflecting your work culture.” That lesson stayed with me throughout my corporate journey.
With my diverse experience across industries and geographies, I have internalized one important truth that our personal culture has greater influence on our performance than the organization culture. Even then, many people spend disproportionate time and energy in complaining about the organization culture than investing it in improving personal culture.
I strongly believe that our personal culture at work consists of apparently smaller but important factors such as;
Seeking clarity before jumping into the job
Quality checks before submitting the work – completeness and accuracy
Respecting the timelines and avoiding the need for reminders
Accepting the feedback with dignity and maturity
Maintaining clear and professional communication
Apart from this, even the smaller things like;
Keeping the working area clean and tidy (may be our table or desk or workstation)
Keeping the files in organized manner in our laptop of system
Maintaining the backup of our work.
Being attentive and being present for meetings well before time,
Making notes during the meeting,
Reverting the calls, messages, and emails etc.,
Our personal culture is not a representation of our functional expertise, but nonetheless it acts as a performance multiplier.
